De initiis. Aspects of Irish Ecclesiastical Learning A.D. 600-800

Máirtín Mac Conmara

The aim of the project De initiis is to ascertain the extent of this learning in the early church, especially in the sixth and seventh centuries. The present paper is interested in evidence regarding biblical learning. It examines the 135 (7th century) glosses in the Old Latin text Usserianus Primus;– Apponius’ commentry on the Canticle and relation with Columbanus (6th cent.) and abbreviation of this in Ireland (7th cent.); the biblical (Vulgate) text and its critical signs in the Cathach and their implications, concluding that behind our present Cathach 7th-cent. text there stood a Double Psalter (as currently in Rouen MS. Bibl.mun. 24) of the sixth century possibly of Irish origin. It finds that the Tituli of the Cathach are of Irish origin, not imported, and the frequently used Legendus ad (“to be read at”) is a forerunner of the later Irish ubiquitous haeret, coniungitur ad of exegetical texts. The 28 Irish Gospel texts (3 of seventh century. Old Latin, Vulgate, Mixed Text), remainder mainly 8th, research history on the topic from 1863 (B.F. Westcott) onwards traced, with the present project to have them all transcribed profesionally and collated. More information in Internet Site insulargospels.net.
